Bill, could you please explain your remark?  I interpret it as meaning
that building equipment (which at one time was the only way of getting
on the air) is somehow inferior to being able to buy on credit, unpack
the box, plug it in and yak. Did you really mean to imply this?

What I build might not be very pretty but I'm proud of them.

True Story!

One Saturday afternoon I was driving down Main Steet in Humble, Texas.
At a rather interminable red light I happened to glance at the license
plate attached to the car in front of me; it was a ham radio license plate.
At that moment I honked CQ on my car horn and the gentleman in the car
in front of me waved his hand in the rear-view mirror.  When the traffic
began to move he pulled into a parking lot where we had a rather enjoyable
eyeball QSO.  We are now friends and honk CQ when we see each other on
the road.

Side note:  I wonder If he would of been a no-code ham he probably would of
thought that I was a crazy dirver wanting him to move out of my way!

Bob: While  I was a fireman I collected five of those huge `Quik-Call'
tone generators. They used 60's technology - huge tone reeds and a
vacuum tube for each reed. The original Quik-Call system used a 2 + 2
format: two tones  sent together followed by two other tones sent
together; Quik-Call II uses a 1 + 1 format: single tone followed
by another single tone.

If you need to decode FM-ND then it looks like you're referring to
the 2 + 2 format.

Note that your fire agency, by sending just MN together can alert
all stations at the same time. The two middle letters are called
the `group call'.

What I need to know is the tone series; Motorola had three series or
groupings of tones: the A-series, B-series, and Z-series; most fire
agencies use Z-series. Find out which tone series your agency uses.

You'll make Motorola mad if you write `Quick' instead of `Quik'  :)

It seems my news reader is some what erratic. I am considering buying a late
model ford Tarus I would like to run 100 watts on 2 meters and 300 on HF.
Are there any problems I should be aware of??

Zero point zero zero miles. There is no interference free guaranteed
zone for co-channel or adjacent channel operations in amateur radio.
Unlike broadcast, amateurs aren't assigned a specific frequency, and
are expected to use frequency agility to solve interference problems.
That's not always practical, especially with repeaters, so there are
some voluntary bandplan guidelines, but they don't have force of law.

In some parts of the country, channels are on 20 kHz centers, and
in other parts of the country channels are on 30 kHz centers. Stations
operating on such separations *shouldn't* interfere with each other
if the transmitters and receivers of all parties are adjusted correctly
and signal strengths are comparable. If the off channel stations' signals
are markedly stronger than the one's you are attempting to copy, you
may still get interference. That's the way it goes with amateur grade
equipment.

If the standard deviations are used, and optimal receiver filtering
is used, stations of equal power separated by 20 kHz *should* be
compatible. But that's rarely the case. That's partially why some
parts of the country prefer 30 kHz channels (though in practice
they may use 15 kHz splits which almost certainly can cause co-channel
problems).

When did this go into effect?  I passed my 5 WPM in January.  I have
received nothing from the FCC.  The VEC just sent me home with the
CSCE and said they did not have to send anything in.   Those who
signed the CSCE were AA9DO, KF9QD and KA9MWT.

Yes!!!   Why are we allowing this summer's spectrum auction?  Why don't

Appendix: How to obtain UUDECODE and UNZIP?

If you get PED/VPED files by mail, you need UUDECODE. If you don't
have it, you can get it by sending mail

    get uudecode.doc
    get uudecode.dbg

Save UUDECODE.DBG on your DOS and feed it to DEBUG (which should be on
almost all DOS) by typing

    DEBUG < UUDECODE.DBG

This will make UUDECODE.COM in a minute.

Just in case you don't have UNZIP, you can get it from the same place
in the same manner with the body line,
